"So, if you don't find them when they are still really tiny, by the time you get to them with a sprayer, they've already done the damage," Kesheimer said. While the caterpillars feed for up to two weeks, they do their worst, most damaging work rapidly in their last few days as caterpillars. "Another good thing to do is go out in the morning when it's still wet and walk through a field, and if you get worms on your boots, think about treating that field," Kesheimer added. That's why entomologists recommend scouting early in the morning or just after dusk, preferably with a sweep net. In the heat of the day, they also huddle near the thatch layer - where grass meets the ground - and only venture out to eat the top of plants when it's cooler. Part of the problem is that armyworms start off incredibly small, with the initial instars measuring less than one sixteenth of an inch, Kesheimer explained. "Growers can look at a field on Friday, and it looks fantastic, and by Sunday, it's completely gone," Kesheimer said. "That helped them expand their range and move farther and farther," Kesheimer said.Ĭommon to this year's armyworm damage were farmers who were stunned by the insect's rapid devastation, which can occur seemingly overnight. shores - just as armyworms were reaching epidemic levels in the South. Things quieted in July, but August brought five storms to U.S. "Two - Claudette and Elsa - had long tracks through the U.S.," Baranick noted. One storm developed in May, with four making landfall throughout June. "This year, we saw a bunch of tropical storms form early on," he added. The country has seen 20 named storms, with seven hurricanes this season, above the yearly average, Baranick noted. "Since adults are migratory, they are flying north, but they also use winds and storms to move around," Kesheimer explained. Throw in an active tropical storm and hurricane season, and the stage was set for armyworms to wreak havoc across a broad geographic range. "They feed faster, they reproduce faster and their life cycle shortens a little," she said. Like all insects, armyworms are cold-blooded, which means they are more active in warmer weather, Kesheimer noted. Starting in June, much of the U.S, especially the northern and western regions, saw above-average temperatures, with the country clocking its hottest summer on record overall this year. "So, we can have five to seven generations in a single season, if the weather is right," Kesheimer said of Alabama growers.Ī hot summer probably didn't help, added DTN Ag Meteorologist John Baranick. Armyworms are blessed with a rapid generation turnover - they can lay eggs, hatch, feed, mature, mate and lay eggs again in a matter of weeks. "We had a warm winter across the South, so more of them survived and got off to an early start, so we started the year with higher numbers," she said. Normally it overwinters in South America or the southernmost regions of Texas and Florida, and adult moths must slowly make their way north each spring, Kesheimer explained. That's unusually early for the insect, which cannot tolerate cold winters. The first red flags of the season were the armyworms spotted in the Midsouth as early as May, eating their way through pastures and hay fields. Growers would do well to invest in a sweep net, get up to speed on local moth monitoring networks and study the identification and management of this pest for next season, she said. "But if you look at what those storm components were - a warm winter, lots of tropical storm systems and potential spray failures - those are going to become more common moving forward and chances are that they will line up again before the next 50 years. "We had the perfect storm of events that led to this snowballing effect that let them take over the entire country," Kesheimer said. This year's fall armyworm epidemic - the worst in nearly five decades by some entomologists' estimates - may be ending, but this level of armyworm infestation could happen more frequently in the years to come, warned Auburn University Extension Entomologist Katelyn Kesheimer. (DTN) - October holds the promise of cold weather, first frosts and, for many, the blessed end of the march of the fall armyworms, a season-long invasion that plagued farmers, ranchers and homeowners across the country this year.īut don't let that welcome chill comfort you too long. (Photo courtesy Katelyn Kesheimer, Auburn University) Here's why it happened and why it could happen again soon. A sweep net filled with fall armyworms was a common sight this year, after the worst armyworm epidemic in decades plagued grain farmers, forage growers and homeowners around the country.

The game also features two multi-player modes head to head, a one-on-one match between two players, or cooperative, where the two players team up in a tag team version of the WrestleMania Challenge in which they must defeat the game's eight wrestlers in groups of two to become the Tag Team Champions. In the more difficult WWF Championship mode, the player must win four Handicap 2-on-1 matches, two Handicap 3-on-1 matches, and finally a 'WrestleMania Challenge,' where the player must defeat every wrestler in the game in a gauntlet, starting with a three-on-one setup, with each eliminated opponent being replaced with another until all eight have been defeated. In the Intercontinental Championship mode, the player must win four one-on-one matches, two Handicap 2-on-1 matches, and one Handicap 3-on-1 match to win the title. WWF WrestleMania features two single-player modes: the Intercontinental Championship and the WWF Championship. Such 'bleeding' objects include dumbbells flying out of Lex Luger and valentine hearts coming out of Bret Hart. A unique feature is that each character can 'bleed' an object that represents them. WrestleMania's one-player mode has the player choose one of eight wrestlers – Bret Hart, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Razor Ramon, Bam Bam Bigelow, Yokozuna, Doink the Clown, and Lex Luger. There are other similarities to the Mortal Kombat games, such as uppercuts that cause the opponent to go sky high, flawless victories and very tongue-in-cheek character animations. While actual wrestling moves are present, matches consist primarily of strike attacks and special moves. Although the original release has not been commercially successful, Deadly Premonition has garnered a cult following and has been cited as an example of games as art. Issues with memory allocation, various lighting and shadow aspects, and the physics engine PhysX were faced during development.ĭeadly Premonition received wildly varying critical reviews and holds the Guinness World Record for the most critically polarizing survival horror game. Development on Deadly Premonition’s setting was guided by an intention to imbue the game with a sense of realism: the non-player characters follow an individualized 24-hour schedule, and the scale of Greenvale is intended to replicate that of a rural American town. Gameplay is divided into York’s detective investigation into Greenvale and its inhabitants, and supernatural combat sequences in which York must battle or evade otherworldly beings. Deadly Premonition combined its assets with a new game scenario and protagonist, Francis York Morgan. When an attached shutter button is pressed, the software interprets what it sees as one of 345 doodles and outputs them. Once I was getting good results on the laptop, I transitioned the code to the Raspberry Pi.”Īt the heart of the device is an internet-connected Raspberry Pi 3 running Raspbian Stretch on a 16GB card, with a v2 Camera Module, outputting to a thermal printer, all housed in a simple cardboard casing. “These quick prototypes led me to flesh out the software and I moved on to an integrated development environment (IDE). He ran a pre-trained network over a few photographs before manually browsing the Quick, Draw! dataset and hand-selecting images which he then copied and pasted together in Paint. “I particularly focused on the emotions and feelings that people might have: their surprise when seeing a cartoon and the excitement of not knowing what it would look like.”Īt the same time, he began prototyping the software using Python and Jupyter Notebook on his laptop. “Through these initial sketches, I set on the idea of a Polaroid camera that draws cartoons, without ever showing the original image,” he says. He began with some basic sketches and ideas focusing mainly on what the user experience would be. So my project originated as a super-fun, simple application for this research, to be enjoyed by all sorts of different people – not just engineers and developers.”Īs such, Dan was keen to keep things simple, fun, and whimsical, and he soon got down to work. “There are some great projects coming out of this research, but many of them are focused on neural networks themselves, rather than simple applications for these networks. “I got the idea while experimenting with some of the amazing open source research into neural networks,” Dan tells us. The result has been more than 50 million doodles, and Dan’s device seeks to match one of them with whatever the neural network reckons has just been snapped. The game is similar to Pictionary in that it suggests an object to sketch, with the twist being that it then uses AI to predict what you’re attempting to scribble. To do this, it makes use of two key components: a neural network and the dataset produced by Google’s online game Quick, Draw! (). This article first appeared in The MagPi 73 and was written by David Crookes Instead of outputting a faithful photograph, it attempts to turn what it sees into a cartoon doodle, instantly spitting it out on to thermal paper like a quirky Polaroid picture. With Dan Macnish’s camera, however, the process and results are a little different. You line up your shot, fiddle with the focus, set the shutter speed, and – flash! – you get a perfect image of whatever is in front of you. Honestly, is it any surprise that the now-62-year-old gypsy queen of '70s rock, singer for the epic band Fleetwood Mac, arbiter of romantic, Gothic style, and writer of magical songs about devastating heartbreak is a Twilight Top 40 singles: “Stand Back,” “If Anyone Falls” and “Nightbird.”Ĭheck back soon for more tributes.Stevie Nicks is Team Edward all the way. Check out the following three posts, which honor the album’s three U.S. Fortunately, Stevie ended up recording this material for subsequent solo albums.Īt the edge of forty, The Wild Heart stands high and mighty in Stevie’s vast solo catalog, an accomplished work anchored by one her most recognizable hits, the Stevie/Prince collabo “Stand Back.” This month, we look back on this incredible recording, revisiting our posts from its 30th anniversary in 2013. With songs endlessly flowing out of her gossamer wings, there could have easily been The Wild Heart 2 consisting of the remaining unrecorded material presented in the deluxe reissue. “Violet and Blue,” an outtake from The Wild Heart sessions, ended up on the Grammy-nominated movie soundtrack for Against All Odds (1984). In 2016, we were treated to even more Wild Heart goodness when Rhino cracked open “The Vault” door ever so slightly to reissue the album with previously unreleased material, such as rare demos for “Sorcerer,” “All the Beautiful Worlds,” and “I Sing for the Things,” among others - none of which made the album’s final cut, of course, so this music was all that much more special to hear. And then came the climactic “IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII’ve changed!” - the sustained note that changed us all forever. “We come from different worlds, but we are the same,” Stevie sang in the dramatic moments of the bridge. Speaking of Mick Fleetwood, “the beast” himself was the subject of the grand-tastic “Beauty and the Beast,” a six-minute orchestral masterpiece, which closed the album. The opening bars of Prince’s “ Little Red Corvette” famously served as the musical inspiration for “Stand Back.” But “The Purple One” also played guitar and synthesizer on the track, creating the song’s distinctive 16th-note musical structure. Who can forget Stevie marching on down her glam-neon “Stand Back” treadmill, rocking chiffon-sleeve realness, the delicate fabric taking to the sky like a spirit in flight? Not to mention how hard it probably was to walk on that crazy thing in five-inch platform boots - fearlessness is fearlessness! Suffice it to say, girlfriend took a risk for the sake of her craft to create this iconic moment in music video history! 5 and became a two-million seller (double platinum) - solidifying Stevie’s path to a remarkable solo career and, ultimately, her induction into the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 2019.Īs you probably know, Stevie was one of the pioneers of the music video revolution in the 1980s, with her splashy videos dominating MTV, Night Tracks, and Friday Night Videos playlists for years.
